Five Happy Families

Five happy families playing in the park,
The day you see was Sunday,
So dad could stay till dark,
The fun they had together was a joy to behold,
But all at once the tears began,
For the children had been told,
"Dad can't be with you next week
His boss says ' You must work,'
Your mother has to cope alone,
So don't drive her berserk".

Four happy families sitting on the beach,
The day you see was Sunday,
The tide was just in reach,
The laughter and the pleasure was a joy to behold,
But once again the tears began,
'Cause the children had been told,
"Mum won't be with us next week,
I'll have to cook the grub,
Her boss has said 'You must work,
We're opening up the pub!

Three happy families going off to Gran,
The day you see was Sunday,
This was their usual plan,
The chatter and embracing was a joy to behold,
But yet again the tears began,
As grandmother was told,
"We can't come to you next week,
The laws have been relaxed,
Instead you'll have to be alone,
Our day off has been axed".

Two happy families taking doggie for a walk,
The day you see was Sunday,
T' was always good to talk,
To reminisce and plan, and play, t’ was a joy to behold,
But how the dog began to whine,
Why wouldn't he be told?
"We can't take you out next week,
You'll have to chew your bone,
These walks you love are over,
For you its home alone.

One happy family looking rather odd,
The day you see was Sunday,
And they're off to worship God,
The singing and the praising was a joy to behold,
Until the tears began to flow,
As by the vicar they were told,
"You won't be with me here next week,
We'll only meet in heaven,
No day of rest will you enjoy,
Instead you're working seven!"

It may seem such a tiny wedge,
The changing of the law,
But the hammer hitting it
Will open wide the door,
And once the door is open
It will never, ever shut,
The life we all can now enjoy,
Is very soon forgot.
